What is At Home In Melrose?

A grassroots effort, At Home In Melrose (AHIM) is a non-profit organization that will help adults continue to live in theirMelrose homes as they grow older. Through a member-driven program, AHIM will provide members with access to popular services and essential resources.

AHIM recognizes that remaining in the community poses certain challenges. Is there a trusted electrician who can fix an electrical outlet? Is therea group of people who would like to go with me to a play in Boston? Who can drive me home from the doctor’s? I know I should exercise, but is there a group of people my age with whom I can exercise?

These are just some of the challenges many of us face. AHIM will help answer such challenges and many more.

How Does it Work?

AHIM is a membership-based organization. Membership entitles you to a range of organized social, educational, and fitness-related activities. Members will have access to a screened list of service providers who have agreed to provide AHIM members with timely, courteous service, often at a discounted price. In concierge-like fashion, AHIM staff will work closely with members and service providers to facilitate projects, assistance, and outings.

Each member also will have the opportunity to participate in a volunteer program that will enable members to engage in a mutually-beneficial bartering system.

What Does It Cost?

AHIM is still in the developmental stage. We anticipate that an individual membership will be around $650 per year. A household membership (two or more people over 50 in the same household) is expected to be around $850 per year.

What’s Next?

The AHIM steering committee has conducted focus groups in Melrose and surveyed many residents. Our research shows that people want to remain in Melrose as they grow older and that many residents feel an organization like AHIM could help them achieve this goal. What do you think?
